Welcome to another writing challenge here on Unbound. I apologize for the delay in posting up this one, it's been a helluva couple of weeks. I hope everyone out there is staying safe. If you haven't participated before, this would be a great opportunity to give it a go. If you have any questions about the changes or the challenge generally, feel free to PM me on this staff account.

Prompt: Your theme for this challenge is family. This can be a biological family, a found family, or the absence of those things and how it affects the character's worldview. Just show us what family means to them.

Submissions should be at least 400 words, but more is always welcome if inspiration strikes. Write from any format or POV of your choosing! This challenge will end November 27th at 11:59pm and will have an award of 200 sovereigns.

i have been cursed with my kindness

you watch, jittering with curiosity, as decaisne’s fair brows furrow just so. the action in itself is novel. these days you enjoy taking note of the little ways people shift and change, how the light catches them at certain angles and washes them in an efflorescent glow. or, maybe, it’s just decaisne that does so? glows, that is.

you watch as a flicker of something passes your guardian’s face, a glimmer of comprehension, soon caught and tucked neatly away behind casual indifference. an interesting trick. you find yourself impatient for the day when you, yourself, are able to mimic that same indifference with as much finesse as he.

despite the presumed turnabout to your dull orlesian evening, decaisne’s actions have now become almost cautious. this missive has changed his mood, though expertly concealed, it’s enough that you've noticed.

it’s amazing, really, that even after all your time together decaisne has somehow managed to remain the same rigid, marmoreal statue of a man that took you in those five years ago. he is the picture of meticulously constructed layers of genteel refinement and self-control —your antithesis in almost all respects. you want, more than anything, to be able to emulate him someday. you will, you decide. it’s only a matter of time.

an open letter is chucked, unceremoniously, onto your lap not ten minutes into your language studies. you peruse its contents with interest and frown, confused upon your completion of it: “that can’t be right.” you state, allowing a sliver of uncertainty to color the words. you pause, mouth puckering, to stare down at the information a second time.

“run it through the usual channels, just in case. cast a line; see what else the network can find.” dark eyes meet with yours then. decaisne is glaring at you, unmoving and moody. you find, much to your immediate surprise, that your guardian’s patience on the matter is paper-thin. you do not move, however. he’s never given you a command like this before and you aren’t sure where to begin. “that wasn’t a suggestion, love.” he warns, voice sugary-sweet, his calm eyes unnerving. then, harshly, with a flick of his wrist: “off with you.”

at that, you fling yourself from your perch and towards the nearest exit with all the grace of a spitting cat. you’ve decided you don’t like him anymore, hurt as you are by his tone. you're resolved to be cross with him until an apology is given and not a moment sooner.

in your haste, you trip over your petticoat on your way out.

he laughs, grins from where he is sat on the other side of the room, and your mirth congeals at the sound. love chokes at you as you mutter expletives under your breath. damn, damn, damn.

your resolve is weak.
